Gandhi was a member of the Indian National Congress. The goal of the Indian National Congress was to gain Independence and organize movements of resistance against the British Rule. Gandhi first went to the congress in 1901 asking for help for the struggle in South Africa. Then in 1917 he returned, and introduced satyagraha as a weapon of political protest in Champaran. Using the Congress, Gandhi was able to organize a countrywide satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act and unfair taxes, and the non-cooperation movement. He united the Congress and made them stronger into a mass movement. In 1921 theGandhi-Irwin talks began, with a resolution demanding complete independence. It was denied, so the Congress turned to civil disobedience and all the major Congress leaders were arrested in 1930. In 1931 Gandhi was choosen to negotiate on behalf of Congress and he made the Gandhi-Irwin Pact. Then there was repression from the British Government. In 1934 with much influence from Gandhi, the Congress Constitution was amended to make nonviolence and khadi its fundamental creeds. In 1942 congress made the unofficially titled “Quit India” Resolution. It asked for British to leave India. Many Congress leaders were arrested. In 1947 the Indian National Congress finally reached its goal of partition and independence.
