Dalits of India could use our help!
Although Gandhi dedicated much of his life to social reform for the Indian caste system, there is still discrimination on the Untouchables, or Dalits, today. They have the lowest jobs, are not allowed to drink from the same wells or attend the same temples, and live in constant fear of public humiliation. The number of crimes against Dalits continues to rise, including violence such as rapes, beatings, and murders. Dalits are considered impure from birth, so they get the lowest paying jobs and have to live in poverty. It is truly sad that in this time there are still people living like this. If more people around the world were informed about the Dalits’ living situation then maybe they could get more help. There is a growing movement of activists, trade unions, and organizations working to peacefully demand better wages and working conditions, but there needs to be something more done against this violation of human rights. People around the world can show their support by donating money for food, education, and shelter. If Dalits are educated, not only to read and write and count, but about hygiene and clean living conditions, then their lives would be significantly improved.
